Costuming vs. Cosplay [02 Mar 2012|02:01pm]

[ mood | curious ]

What's the difference for you between costuming and cosplay?

Lately I've seen "cosplay" used almost exclusively to refer to any kind of costuming (re-creations, hall costuming, steampunk, etc.), but I see them as different. I'm curious what other costumers think.

DISCUSS! :)

Southern California anime fans! [21 Jun 2011|09:52am]

[ mood | chipper ]

Hi! I'm new here and I'm really glad that I found this community. SoCal is the best! <3

Anyway, just a couple of announcements for any anime fans living around around LA and Orange County -- we have two big anime cons coming up in a couple of weeks, Anime Expo in Downtown Los Angeles and AM^2 in the Anaheim Convention Center (right across the street from Disneyland). Fortunately for some (and unfortunately for others), both cons are taking place on Independence Day weekend, and each has it's own free activities to offer this year.

-- AM^2 is free admission for all main events (Dance, Exhibit Hall, Autograph Sessions, Arcade, ect.), with options to buy passports for discounts/early entrance to events/extra goodies. Even better, our favorite American importer of manga Tokyopop (RIP) will be holding one last liquidation sale in AM^2's exhibit hall. For those not in the know, Tokyopop announced that it's North American branch, situated in LA, would be closing at the end of May. They had one liquidation sale in their LA office early May, and now this one. If you missed the first one, I'd definitely recommend checking this one out. If it's anything like the one they had before, it's going to be magnificent!

--Anime Expo announced last week that they will be selling Exhibit Hall Only passes and Dance only passes. Prices for those vary depending on the days you're gonna be there, but they're worth it if those are your only interests. They're cheaper than full passes, anyway. Even better, Exhibit Hall will now be free after 3:30 PM. Yesterday, it was announced that refunds and downgrades for passes will now be accepted, regardless of the date you bought them. Check out their website for more info. :)

Personally, I'll be checking out both this year. Those free options are really sweet, especially regarding that Tokyopop sale at AM^2!

Heavy Ink comics controversy [12 Jan 2011|12:05am]

esprix
[ mood | concerned ]

If anyone out there buys their comics from Heavy Ink, an online comics retailer, I offer that you might want to reconsider, as the president, Travis Corcoran, seems to think shooting members of Congress isn't such a bad idea (to quote, "1 down, 534 to go," in reference to the January 8 shooting in Tucson, Arizona that left 6 people dead and critically injured U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, the intended target of the attack, being the first of the 535 members of Congress).

Needless to say there's been some significant buzz, including Paul Cornell asking readers not to buy his books from the site, and Nick Spencer specifically requesting that Corcoran stop stocking his books.

There's also been a lot of hemming and hawing from Corcoran - in a long, rambling diatribe he outlines his political views, and although at one point he says, "No, I do not endorse shooting at politicians in 2011," he seems to think an armed revolution is just over the horizon (i.e., shooting at politicians sometime in the future would be acceptable); on his Twitter account he says, "I don't incite the killing of any politicians; that would be illegal. I merely think that it's morally legitimate."

Although I hope I included enough links to pertinent information so that someone could make up their own mind about this, I'm posting this because I think this guy is a tremendous douchebag that deserves all the bad karma he can get. Is he entitled to his opinion? Of course, and he's equally entitled to spread it all over the internet if he so desires. I don't think, however, that hateful rhetoric like this should be rewarded, so I'm equally free to spread that opinion all over the internet myself.

theatre unleashed presents it's a wonderful life“Look daddy, teacher says every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.”

One of the most beloved and treasured films of all time, nothing reflects the joy, soul, and celebration of the holiday season more than Frank Capra’s sentimental classic It’s A Wonderful Life. Now, Theatre Unleashed is pleased to bring this heart-warming tale to the stage in a one-night-only production of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. Set on Christmas Eve, 1946 at a New York radio station, the show offers patrons a behind-the-scenes look at a piece of nostalgia from a simpler time, as the cast, radio manager, secretaries, sound effects technician and assistants from WBFR in Manhattan come together to produce a special radio presentation of this touching holiday masterpiece.

Looking for help building an original Flash widget. [28 Feb 2009|11:04pm]

rogue01
I'm looking for someone who can help me design an original flash widget to promote Theatre Unleashed's latest production, "The Way of the World" and that's willing to work for free. I'm looking to make an embeddable flash app that can allow users to select a painting from a variety of provided pictures and add "magnetic poetry" captions to them, sort of like this:

.

I'd build this myself, but I don't have the right software or expertise. Unfortunately, I don't have any money to pay you, but you will certainly get designer credit and I'll throw in two free tickets to the production this will be promoting. If you're interested and willing to work for free, please send me an e-mail or post a reply here ASAP. Thanks!

Thirsty for knowledge! [02 Dec 2008|11:40am]

I've got a web site for a non-profit organization that I'm looking to overhaul completely. I have designed a new frontend, but I need to build a backend employing php and MySQL. The only catch - I have no clue what I'm doing. I am very computer savvy, though and a fast learner. I'd love to meet up with someone and have them teach me a few basics. This will be a simple site. It just has lots of data that needs to be displayed on a template that needs to be easy to customize and change. I have no money to offer, but if you're willing, I'll buy the coffee and give you partial design credit. If you're up for helping out a newbie, please drop me a line. Thanks!

Hunter: the Vigil LARP in Los Angeles [05 Sep 2008|01:23pm]

thelastmehina
Cross-posting to hell and gone, my apologies for people who get this multiple times.

I picked up Hunter: the Vigil a couple weeks ago. And it is a fantastic and wonderful game. So fantastic and wonderful, in fact, that I want to run it. As a troupe game. Completely unaffiliated with any organized play group... just me and my staff, running the game the way I think would be the most fun for everyone.

I've been working on developing the setting for the past little while. And so, I can gladly announce, the wiki is here: http://candlelight.wikispaces.com/, and the yahoogroup is here: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/candlelight_larp/. The first game is tentatively scheduled for the first Friday of October, starting at 7 pm, at the Glendale City Hall.

Right now, the game will probably be run in the L.A. area - but I have folks interested in the game from Santa Barbara to Orange County, so I'm up for shifting the game site to make it convenient for everyone (or, as will likelier be the case, equally inconvenient for everyone!).

Tell your friends! Spread it around! It'll be totally awesome! If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me at lady dot von dot syrus at gmail dot com.

San Diego Vampire: The Requiem & Werewolf: The Forsaken LARP's [27 Jul 2008|09:41am]
camarillakai
My name is Kai and I am currently deployed to Iraq, but shall be returning in the middle of next month. I am a member of the Camarilla, White Wolf's Official Fan Club and Global Sanctioned Chronicle. Over the course of this deployment the number of local players has dropped significantly. With my return, I hope to open up an opportunity for new players to join the game and make this as large a game as it once was, if not bigger and better.

As such, I am announcing my intention to hold a game focusing on new players. I will be available to introduce people to the game. Currently, we hold games at the SDSU campus on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month.

We are also discussing a brand new Werewolf: The Forsaken game for those who are interested. This will likely take place 2 Fridays a month, to be announced at a later time.

If you are interested in either the Intro game for Vampire: The Requiem or the new game of Werewolf: The Forsaken, please email me at CamarillaKai at gmail.

Anyone going to the LosCon (http://www.loscon.org/) sci-fi convention Thanksgiving Weekend near LAX? I want to go but don't know anyone else who's going and I don't want to go alone. I'm not into anything so hard core that I'd go regardless. I used to "cheat" and volunteer at conventions to save myself the torture of attending alone - keeping busy and being behind the scenes is a whole different world than being a regular attendee. The last con I went to was a disaster - see my notes in the "unsent" letters community and prepare to die a little bit...

Anyway I dabble in comics, Magic the Gathering, video games - I haven't played any on a long time due to work and not having a decent console - sci-fi including Trek, Stargate, Star Wars, strange stuff like Roswell, Alien Nation, old stuff like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, and anything that's FUN most importantly. I guess it's a general kind of geekdom, but I like it and the people are fun and I need to get over some stuff, so someone write me back and let's have a drink and be geek(ier)!

IM or email me here at LJ.
